What got you into art? What got you into comic art? My love for comics at about 10 years old got me into art and so of course comic art was what I wanted to do. You have a lot of retro florescent styled art? What got you into that style and how do you make such art? I liked drawing and tried to paint, but was never any good at painting. Then I saw spray paint art and loved the speed and details you could get with it. So I watched some videos and incorporated that into the comic world. I liked the bright colors for the spaces scenes I learned spray paint art with and found out they were fluorescent, so I just went with that and created the black light art I now concentrate on. I use my ability to draw and spray paint techniques, using dish washing liquid and power washing with water, with multi layers to create my canvas art. You do a lot of events in North Texas, what are some of your favorites and why? Over the last 7 years I’ve done most of them. They are all my favorites, but Denton Art and Jazz fest is one I like because it’s an art show not a comic con, its juried and hey I made the cut. What are some local creators that you enjoy their work? I like almost everybody’s work I can’t single anyone out. What are some of your favorite pieces? Even though I’m a marvel guy, my various Batman and Joker pieces are my favorites. If you could work on any project, character or creator, what or who would it be and why? I am working on my own story, for a novel or graphic novel. I would love to make it into a movie. What shows are you doing next? I have 28 shows this year spanning 72 days. For my schedule go to Mitchellstudios.com What advice would you give artists just starting out with comic art. Practice practice practice. What advice would you give for starting out in the convention circuit? Find someone like me that’s been doing it for a few years and get as much info from them as possible, most of us are willing to help. By David Doub What got you into cosplay? I have been a model and photographer since I was a teenager. I used to make small prop, accessories and simple clothing pieces for my photoshoots. When I moved to DFW in 2016 I responded to an ad for a model to promote the Suicide Squad movie and I thought I could make my own costume instead of waiting on their costume person to find me something that would work. I met alot of cool people and I was hooked. What are some of your favorite cosplays? I love being Belle. Princesses get the best reactions from kids. I also love being Xena because it was a huge part of my childhood and the people that know about Xena always appreciate it. And my new favorite is Nott the Brave, a goblin character from Critical Role. I love not having to worry about being a pretty girl and being the goblin that I really am deep inside. What got you into Capes for Kindness and other cosplay charity groups? My time in the military made me realize the impact of charity work. I thought since I spent so much time and money on these costumes I may as well put them to good use. It is also a great feeling to go out and make some kids happy. It's addicting What have been some creative challenges in Cosplay? How have you’ve solved such challenges? Lately my biggest challenge is working on costumes that have little to no references to work with. A lot of the costumes I have worked on lately are from Critical Role. They usually only have one official image. Much of the time I end up using fan art and other Cosplayers as my inspiration for the costume. What are the Pros and Cons of Cosplay as whole? As we get older it is harder to make friends. Cosplay has helped me meet so many people with similar interests. It also helps as a creative and social outlet. So this are definitely pros. The biggest con of cosplay is some people think that since you are cosplaying they have a right to voice their personal opinion about how you look or your abilities to create. I have just learned to ignore these people. With the crossover of Cosplay and Modeling with the increased focus of Body Positivity, who do view how Cosplay has dealt with this subject? So far I have never had any issues with body shaming in the actual cosplay community. Everyone has always been kind and accepting of people of different types. The negativity I see is usually from outsiders that aren't involved at all. People that want to tell US what cosplay is or what our Cosplays or Cosplayers should look like. Mostly internet trolls. And my method to deal with them is to block and ignore. What is your favorite con story? Not really a Con but last year at Scarborough Faire I offhandedly set up a meetup for critical role fans. Not really expecting much out of the meetup but surprisingly quite a few people showed up and we all sat in the pouring rain and tried not to ruin our body paint while walking in the parade. That group became some of the closest friends I've made as a cosplayer. What are some of your favorite events? Fan Expo is great for the "Big Con Experience". ArlingCon is my favorite small con for sure. I also love spending my weekends in the spring hanging out in cosplays at Scarborough faire. I don't go to out of state conventions so I'll my experience is local. Who are some of your favorite local cosplayers? What are other local cosplayers doing that you really appreciate and/or admire? This is a hard question. Almost everyone I know in DFW is a cosplayers in some capacity I could never choose. And I admire them all for different things. I appreciate them for their kindness, how they go out of the way to include everyone, dedication to charity work, their talent and their creativity. That's the best thing about this community there is a little bit of everything! If you could cosplay anything or anyone regardless of money, time and effort, what would it be? I have always wanted to do a big armor build. But it is a lot of time and effort that I just don't have anymore. I would love to cosplay as Warchief Lady Sylvanas from World of Warcraft I have the patterns and supplies just not the time. If there was one thing you could say about Cosplay for all to hear, what would that one thing be? Cosplay is for everyone. Cosplay is not consent. What got you into Roleplaying and Dungeons and Dragons in Particular? I had always wanted to play D&D but never knew how to get started. After meeting so many nerd friends though cosplay I finally found my first group. And Critical Role and Adventure Zone really brought D&D back into the main steam the last few years and now I have multiple games every week! Describe your favorite RP Character? Do you cosplay as that character? Right now I have two characters that I play regularly. Alina, a light cleric that I play with my critical role cosplay group AKA"The Snack Pack". I really like how our backstories mesh together seamlessly without us collaborating at all. And Artimesia water Genasi monk that I play in a campaign with my husband as the DM. I just love the simplicity of playing as a non spellcaster. And being able to explore the creative process of storytelling and collaboration.with my husband. I don't cosplay as either YET but both are in the works. I have cosplayed older characters of mine in the past. What are some of your favorite North Texas stores for gaming supplies and to game at? Multiverse, Gen X, Sci Fi factory What would you tell people who have never played RPGs but are curious about it? It's not as intimidating as it looks! There are plenty of online groups to find a new adventuring group. And so far everyone has been nice and accommodating. Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Tumblr @liljerbear47 Facebook.com/liljerbear47
